My (cheap) Macro Photography Setup

Just wanted to show how I do my macro shots using my beloved Kamiko (my Nikon D90).

I am using a reverse ring mounted on an 18-55mm kit lens plus a styro plate to diffuse the pop-up flash. The toothpick you are seeing is to partially open up the aperture ring because in this setup, IT IS ALL MANUAL!!! hehehe.Β  πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

I’ll update this post next time to show you the step by step procedure on how I do this setup.

Meanwhile, here are some sample shots using this cheap setup.

My very first ‘decent’ macro shot (March 03, 2011), a SCREW. hehe.

  1. This are amazingly sharp macros. I heard about this reverse ring and extension tubes produce the same results. I love the diffuser there man, lol

Nice setup. Can you please show us how the tooth pick works? Thanks!

      • Will try to take a picture of the aperture lever where you put the toothpick and explain it. Thanks =)

  2. wow ! super-awesome man ! i would have never believed a 18-55mm can take these kind of pics before i saw this !
but, what do you do about the depth of field? with 18-55mm its hard to get good DOF need for macro-shooting….

      Hello iChowdhury!

First of all thanks for the comment.
Depth of field is controlled by the aperture ring. A small toothpick can open up your aperture a little bit to let some light pass through.

Without the toothpick, DOF is higher/thicker but it would be dark in your viewfinder. So it’s for you to decide how thick or thin the toothpick would be.

      Thanks =)

next is to try shooting na hehe.

      -Kites =)
